Gay Marrige, What is the Big Deal.

As you may have heard New Jersey’s Supreme Court has ruled the state must re write its marriage laws to include equal rights for gay couples. I agree with this move. After all, a person’s sexual orientation should hot determine weather they can marry. President Bush has decided to go on about how allowing gay marriage will somehow destroy the institution of marriage. He said that marriage is a sacred institution between a man and woman. I’m guessing he is basing this on a biblical definition. The problem with that logic is not everyone believes in the bible or God for that matter so as president he should not be pushing his beliefs on everyone else. A marriage is just a piece of paper legally binding two people together weather they be a straight couple or gay. These people who claim that marriage will somehow destroy the sacred meaning of marriage never seem to have an explanation of how this will happen. When asked this question they either ignore you or claim, “The bible says it’s wrong.” The problem with that logic is not everyone believes in the bible and many of us just see it as a nice work of fiction. Stories written a long time ago to explain to the people of the time why certain tings happened. What we now know as mental illness was blamed centuries ago on demons. Now we know better.

My personal feeling is people who are gay are born gay. Being gay is not a learned trait. You are not going to turn gay by having a gay neighbor. Your kids are not going to turn gay by hanging out with gay people at school. So you can get those arcane ideas out of your head right now. My wife and I have many friends who are gay and they would all say they have been that way their entire lives. So if we want to take the religious argument that being gay is a sin that would mean God created people who he already condemns. Why would a God do this? When I ask this question of certain religious people all they can say is, “You’re not supposed to question Gods reasoning.” In other words, they have no answer for you so they just pull that stock answer out of their rear ends to keep you from questioning them on their beliefs.

I really don’t think most people care if John marries Sam or Jessica marries Beth. The people who seem to make the most noise about the issue of gay marriage seem to be a small minority who grab the headlines. Why these people are so concerned about what goes on in someone else’s bedroom escapes me. Are their own sex lives so inadequate that they have to worry so much about other people’s bedroom behavior? These right wing nut jobs need to learn to mind their own business. I think most people realize there are more pressing issues than gay marriage. I’m guessing this is why President Bush brought the issue of gay marriage back in to the for front. He is fighting a losing battle in Iraq and he knows it. October has been the deadliest month for US troops this year. At the time of this writing 96 US soldiers have been killed on October and there is no sign of the violence letting up. Recent polls have shown that gay marriage is not at the top of most people’s minds. So Bush has to rally the religious right to make some noise on the gay marriage issue to take attention away from his failing policies in Iraq. So basically he is using the religious right for his own personal gain.

One more point, Bush and the other right wing waccos want a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. The last time I checked, the constitution was supposed to give rights not take them away. Maybe the religious right should keep this in mind next time they go spouting off about banning gay marriage.
